When COVID-19 brought tourism to a halt, bars closed overnight, leaving thousands of liters of beer at risk of expiring across Bariloche.
For Cerveza Patagonia and the local brewing community, the challenge was urgent: how to transform excess stock into an opportunity, while supporting an entire ecosystem under pressure.

Beer was about to go to waste. But through distillation, it could be transformed.
We turned a limitation into a new category: a gin made from beer.
This is how Comunal was born.
A collaborative solution built with Patagonia and three local breweries, transforming existing kegs into a limited-edition product. More than a drink, it became a shared response to crisis, blending brewing culture with distillation to create something entirely new. A product that carries the DNA of beer, both in flavor and in spirit.

We developed a product and identity rooted in collaboration. Comunal was crafted by distilling beer from multiple breweries and refining it through a maceration process that preserves its malty character. The result: a product that surprises both beer enthusiasts and gin drinkers.
The visual identity reflects this collective spirit, balancing Patagonia’s brand language with cues from craft brewing culture. The product launched in two varieties, with both bottled and on-tap formats, including exclusive cocktails designed for Patagonia’s refugios. The entire system, from naming to packaging and communication, reinforces the idea of community-driven creation.

Comunal was released as a limited edition of 12,000 units, activating both retail and on-site experiences. By repurposing beer that would have otherwise been discarded, the project helped sustain local breweries during a critical moment.
More than avoiding waste, Comunal turned crisis into collaboration.
A product born from necessity, that strengthened an entire community.
